Hey Baby what’s Your Sign?

Oh the joys of pick up lines. That’s what we are dishing today. Just for fun, let’s take a gander at some of these beauties I found…

  1. Are your legs tired? ’cause you been running through my mind ALL day long.
  2. Look at you with all those curves, and me with no brakes.
  3. I’m new in town. Can you give me direction to your apartment?
  4. I’m feeling a little off today. Would you like to turn me on?
  5. You can forget about going to heaven because it’s a sin to look that good.
  6. Baby you look so sweet you’re giving me a cavity.
  7. Be unique and different, say yes.
  8. I’m fighting the urge to make you the happiest woman on earth tonight.
  9. Gee, that’s a nice set of legs, what time do they open?
  10. Should I call you in the morning or nudge you?

I can just see the hero in a romance novel making away with the heroine for some hot and heavy entanglements after delivering one of these lines. What are some pick up lines you have heard, used, or written?

But the one up front, yeah in the black vest… quit looking. He already has MJ’s name on him… he stole my hat, possibly my chaps, maybe even my whip. I have to get them back. Sorry ladies, but there are more where he came from.

Hope you enjoy your weekend!

For Your Pleasure~

If the kind of sex in novels existed in our real lives, the romance genre probably wouldn’t be the biggest selling in the market, nor so darn popular among writers. Long and short of it is: we like to read and write the way we wish it were. Let us interject here—if you have the kind of sex life most of us only read about…keep it to yourself. We hate people like you. (JK, of course ;) )

In all sincerity, romantic and erotic novels provide temporary, gratifying escapes from the real world into the land of fantasy. There is something to tantalize every taste - Men we could fall in love with and women we can relate to, men who are hot and women we wish we could be. Stories filled with sex that is against the walls, on the floor, in the car, up against the mini bar, or just downright full of carnal pleasures. Do you find that you too read and/or write for a vicarious sort of fulfillment?  To find satisfaction in fantasy where it’s lacking in real life?Once again, it wouldn’t be fair of us to ask without answering ourselves.  So, read our confessions and then tell us yours.

Ally:  I took off several years from writing around the time I had my first son and then subsequently got married.  I honestly think what instigated my interest again was indeed the fact that real life just wasn’t cutting it for me.  And it wasn’t even about sex at first.  My husband was working out of town and I was just plain lonely.  Reading and writing romance novels filled a void for me.  As time went on, however, and the DH and I fell into the marital rut most couples find themselves in at one point or another, I started reading heavier, more sexual stories.  That sparked my interest in writing them.  Which then sparked a more personal interest in my marriage, if you know what I mean. ;)  I no longer feel the need to read or write to make up for any shortcomings (no pun intended) in real life, but rather because I simply like to.  And who knows…maybe I’ll write something someday that will fill help fill a void someone else is feeling.

MJ: I’ve always read, just to relax or just to give my mind a respite from whatever may have been plaguing me. My mom is a passionate reader. Something my sister and I both inherited from her. I didn’t really read and enjoy my first romance books until the last few years. Growing up, as some of you have heard me say before, my mother’s romance books used to send me into fits of laughter. Now I have a new found respect for the authors of those books. I tried to avoid writing romance scenes to be honest. My life is not filled with many hot, sweaty, and tangled up in the sheets kind of moments. Those moments shared with DH, enjoyed and appreciated, though admittedly way different than any I have ever read. Now I read those erotic and romantic scenes with fervor. Real life is not always hearts, flowers, and balls to the wall sex. But there are times when reading or writing those scenes are honestly cathartic experience, a release if you will, for heart, body, and soul. Cheesy I know, but oh so true for this closet sex scene writer.

Now come on, we shared. It’s your turn.

Freaky Friday: Gettin’ in the Mood

Yes, we’re talking sex! It ain’t called Hot & Bothered for nothin’ folks! This week we’re playing a little Q & A. We pose the question, you spill all the juicy details! We do mean ALL the details. ;) So what are we asking today? We want to know what you do to set the mood when it comes time for your characters to get their freak on. Is it a process where you surround yourself with certain mood enhancing items? Do you simply think sex and you are ready to write? Or are you one of those lucky writers, eagerly rubbing your hands together with a sinister smile on your face thinking…“Oh yeah, Sex!” with a cheesy 70’s porn track is playing in the background of your mind.  Bom Chica Bow Wow

To show you that we play fair, we are even putting ourselves up on the block for a little sharing time, too.

MJ: Honestly, being new to writing sex, I have found that the first time it took quite a bit to set the mood, I was like a virgin nervously waiting for the inevitable hotel room trip or backseat on prom night. I am trying to find my rhythm still. Setting the mood is imperative for me to help my characters get their freak on… if I don’t, then I am prone to torturing them for days while I try to work through the scene. Lights dimmed, maybe a candle, and music are all a necessity when I try to get in the mood. Then when all else fails, I go to my movie shelf, snatch Chocolat, and settle in for a little visual stimulation with a glass of wine in hand.

Ally: It doesn’t take much to get me in the mood for writing sex. :)  In fact, I love writing the steamy scenes so much that, more often than not, I have to get myself out of the mood and my mind onto something other than sex.  The steamy stuff doesn’t always come easy, however.  Sometimes I do have to put a little effort in to get a scene just right and that’s when I break out the heavy artillery:  The perfect music–forget the mushy gushy stuff…nothing works better for me than angry rock.  My infamous smelly man candles–a little mouthwatering aromatherapy does amazing things to my creativity.  Let’s not forget the right mood-enhancing drink–a beer if I’m writing, say, on the sly, wall sex and something sweet and tangy like a daiquiri if I’m writing soft and sensual, in a bed sex.  Finally, and regardless of whether or not I’ve set the mood, I have to be alone and uninterrupted.  I can’t write sex with the kids poking their heads into the room every five minutes–that’s a total buzz kill!  This would probably explain why I usually write the sex scenes really late at night or into the wee hours of the morning.

Now it’s your turn to share!  You know you want to, so don’t be shy–lay it on us.  Then make sure you come back next week for an extra special installment of Freaky Friday.  We’re not going to say exactly what’s happening just yet, but…ehem…(whispers) it might involve a guest blogger and a giveaway. :)
